iPhone messages showing read even though I've never read them

I got an iPhone 11 in November last year, yet recently, whenever someone sends in a message through iMessage, it'll show up as read even though I've never opened the message before and have never received a notification about the message. Or, it would show up as unread yet I wouldn't get a notification. However, iMessage works perfectly fine on my MacBook. This only started happening a few days ago, and I'm worried maybe someone has hacked into my phone? Does anyone know what's happening? Thanks!

Have you checked all the devices associated with your AppleID? See if you have any devices that you don't recognize. You can check the list of devices on Setting and Apple ID (Top Option) and you should see the list of devices associated with your Apple ID.

If the iMessage is being marked as 'read' immediately. You might have another issue and I'd recommend removing/disablign iMessage altogether from all of your devices and start enabling it one by one starting with your phone and validating that iMessage is working as it should.

I only have two devices associated with my AppleID (one is my iPhone and the other is my MacBook).

Apparently, it doesn't get marked as 'read' from the other end when they send it over but it shows as read on my end, meaning that I won't know which messages I have read and have not read.
