Constantly switching between Imessage and Text Message

I just started using the 11 pro and it will switch between Imessage and text message for other Iphones I have not texted for a bit in the same day. After they respond it switches back to Imessage.

This has never happened with any previous IPhone. What is causing this?

Howdy IndyMattB,

Congratulations on your new iPhone 11 Pro! It sounds like you have a question about why a message would send as an SMS rather than an iMessage. We'd be happy to assist. If the iMessage service is unavailable messages may be sent as an SMS text if you have this feature turned on. You can double-check this in Settings > Messages > Send as SMS. Additionally, if you only want to send as an iMessage you can turn this feature off.

Before sending a message, you can view the text field to see if the message will be sent as an SMS text or an iMessage.

The article here has a great visual of the screen for both: About iMessage and SMS/MMS

You can also view other reasons you may see your message show up as an SMS text here: If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch Specifically the section "If you see a green message bubble."

Let us know if that helps.

Cheers!

IndyMattB,

Thanks for the information. We'd recommend checking to ensure your iOS is up to date. The article here can assist: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Additionally, if you notice issues with the date and time we'd recommend the steps here: If you can’t change the time or time zone on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

However, as stated in the article previously sent if you see a green bubble it may be that "Message is temporarily unavailable on your device or on your recipient’s device."

Keep us posted if you need any assistance updating, or find any issue with the date and time settings on your device. We're happy to continue.

Take Care.

Hi Rose,

I understand all that, but I don't believe that is what is happening. It seems to be either a time or travel is resetting the connection between my phone and other Iphones. So after some amount of time or travel, I'm not sure which it is, people I always Imessage with will get a text message until they respond and then it switches back to Imessage. I'm not sure why my phone is switching it from blue to green. This is all happening in the Indianapolis Metropolitan area so no one has been out of the service area.

I am having the same problem on the west coast. I can be texting another iPhone user and it will switch from blue to green to blue to green completely randomly. The person I'm texting is having the same issue. Both of us are in a stationary location with a steady WiFi signal. To make things more curious, I have two iPhones (work and personal) and it is only happening on one phone.
