Lack of IPv6 on Vodaphone 4g

Struggling to connect a 4g router, with a Vodaphone network sim, to my Airport Time Capsule. Due to the lack of support for IPv6 on Vodaphone, the automatic setup will not recognise the internet. Any users an idea on a work around?

The TC auto set up guide doesn't work, presumably due to the lack of IPv6 from Vodaphone 4g network??

I doubt that is the issue.. in fact on your local network it is really important that the TC does NOT use Internet IPv6.. but it must use link-local only. For a long while now configuration of the Airport routers requires IPv6 but you cannot use real IPv6 unless the Airport is the main router.

There is a good chance something else is going on, due to the way 4g network functions.

I went through a fairly long discussion helping someone with Netgear M2 4G LTE router and had loads of issues with running an Apple router .. in fact we needed to run it in router mode as I remember to get it to work.. which leads to other problems. Double NAT at the least. Most 4G network will use 10.0.x.x IP range which happens to be native range used by the Apple airports.. but we could not get it functional due to Netgear having terrible Bonjour issues I think. To say nothing of triple NAT or whatever.

I think we are going to need to get serious to figure this one out.

First question.. the whole network should work fine without the TC at all. The MR6400 should work as your main router and everything is picking up IP from it.

Typically TP-Link will use 192.168.0.1 as home address. Is that correct?

Perhaps you can give me a screenshot from a computer of the LAN setup. I have only blanked out the IPv6 public IP. The private IP are irrelevant to anyone outside your network.

And under advanced.

So my router is using 192.168.20.1 as home IP as well as using IPv6.. but I can shut off IPv6 and it makes no difference as far as the local network is concerned.

Here is the TC setup.

I found using Static IP helps loads.. and you can use any DNS you like.. I just use public ones.. since the TC is set to bridge mode. But I can also use 192.168.20.1.. i.e. same as router. This is irrelevant because it is not passing DNS to the network.

IPv6 is link local only.

Even if the automatic setup fails.. you can manually configure the TC to match the network and access it by using IP.

What are you trying to achieve with the TC??

We might be able to suggest other ways of doing things if it won't work.

Are you using a Gen5 TC.. i.e. tower model?

Are you configuring it from your Mac?

The router is a TP-Link model TL-MR6400, with ethernet ports. The router is hard wired into our ethernet network which is hubbed with a Netgear ProSafe 16 Port electronic switch. Our challenge is the house is an old converted stone barn, so walls are 2ft thick. Router is upstairs and home office is down, so the router has to communicate on the Network.

This has work fine for years with a standard copper wire broadband - except we get 6-8mbps download and 0.8 upload so time for change.

I have set the TC in bridge mode and can get an IPv4 address, have copied the DNS server number from the router control programme and believe I have correctly set the router IP address in TC. But obviously I haven't!!

Have tried to set Static numbers in manually but not successful.

Any further thoughts most appreciated.

Thanks for your thorough reply. Will start with the last 2 questions. The TC is the pre Tower model - not sure which gen. We live in an old store barn. Currently BT Broadband into the Ethernet network (from one side of the house). The TC acts as a recipient of the broadband and creates a central house wifi network, that supports 2 additional Airport Express devices to cover the house. Internet connection and Music management across a number of rooms.

Set up is via a Mac.

The TP link home IP address is 192.168.1.1

Just did some trials, with interesting results ( excuse the phots but juggling devices)

I connected my MacBook Air to a house ethernet port- connection results

Not sure why the image went left!

I then connected the router directly into the MacBook via ethernet cable

Next I activated the MacBook Air wifi with a good connection.

So could not connect on the network, but successful direct to the router.

So clearly we have a router to ethernet network setting problem??

That is what it appears to me.

You did not state clearly internet is working when you are plugged directly to the router but I am guessing that is the case.

You are not getting an IP at all plugged into the ethernet.

Let me get straight the test configuration.

Is the BT broadband still turned on and working?

Did you plug the TP-Link into the switch as well also working?

Your computer did not pickup an address from the switch, which means something is wrong in that configuration.

Can you unplug the existing BT router if you have not done that already.. And then plug a LAN port of the TP-Link (NOT WAN) to the switch which you can then test by connecting to a wall socket that is connected back to that switch.. it is a good idea to power cycle the switch doing that.. not required but speeds things up.

Tell me how that goes.

Sorry we are on opposite sides of the world. ( You are in UK .. I am in your Antipodean Colony).

So answers can have long delays.

Evening.. !!

LOL!! Sometimes it is so easy.. you have a dead ethernet port.. !!

You will need to check the port on the switch but more likely cable or outlet.. get it reterminated if it still does not work.

You should be able to configure the TC now without too much trouble.

Your setup is old.. the last of the pizza box models came out in 2011-2013 and of course the Express even second gen could be even older. At some point you are going to need to update the airplay side of things.
