I have a MacBook Air 2020 and trying to connect it to my iMac (late 2012)

I have a MacBook Air 2020 and trying to connect it to my iMac (late 2012) in Target Display Mode. It works on my MacBook Pro 2019, but not the MBA 2020. Was that functionality removed for the 2020 models? I am using the Apple Thunderbolt cable and adapter. The MacBook Air and Pro are both running macOS Catalina 10.15.6 and the iMac is running macOS 10.12.6. The 2019 Mac works with TDM while the 2020 Mac doesn't. Is there a way to get this working? Thanks.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Per recent edits to this Apple support article, it appears that 2020 Macs no longer support Target Display Mode:

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

Notice the first sentence below the image of the computers:

There are evolving user reports here that TDM may still work with 2020 Macs but only with older iMacs like the 2009-10 models are used as external monitors.
