Apple TV 4K - Dolby Vision version (outputting)

Im having issues with a Dolby Vision compatible soundbar that isn't working with Apple TV 4K, and LG have asked me to find out what version of Dolby Vision the Apple TV 4K is outputting???

(In case the soundbar version isn't compatible)

Anyone know?

I have the latest Apple TV 4K update which was in the mid July I believe - tvOS 13.4.8

Dolby Vision (video) or Dolby Atmos (audio)? Not sure how a soundbar would impact DV…

Apple TV will tell you if Dolby Vision is available, by testing the capability of the devices and HDMI connection. You will not see options that aren’t available for use.

Apple TV will output video according to your settings. This isn’t fixed like a ‘version’.

4K, DV (12-bit), 60 Hz, YCbCr, 4:2:0 chroma would be a good setting. I would advise against RGB instead of YCbCr (for this use), and I would advise against other chroma settings (for this use). They add no video improvement but do cost extra bandwidth, possibly more than HDMI 2.0 allows for, thus restricting some other features, like a trade-off between HDR and frame rate.

A soundbar wouldn’t do any video processing, just passthrough if it is set up in between the Apple TV and the TV. Its compatibility only relates to passthrough and the needed bandwidth for that. With HDMI 2.0 ports with HDCP 2.2, and HDMI cables rated for 18 Gbps or better, it shouldn’t be any issue.

Soundbar video passthrough: Apple TV → [HDMI] → soundbar → [HDMI-ARC] → TV

Soundbar not involved with video at all: Apple TV → [HDMI] → TV → [HDMI-ARC] → soundbar

Dolby Vision. I’ve already done exactly what you stated in your reply it LG who have asked what version of Dolby Vision the Apple TV outputs as the soundbar Dolby Vision passthrough is only compatible with certain versions of Dolby Vision.

I have the correct cables in the correct ports and the correct settings but the soundbar is not passing through Dolby Vision but the Apple TV to TV does give Dolby vision so the soundbar is the issue and LG have said it’s not compatible with all Dolby Vision versions hence my asking what version (software I guess) Apple TV uses so they can fully see why it’s not working.

I had no idea of Dolby Vision versions until you mentioned it. Public Apple documentation makes no mention of DV versioning.

Not very in-depth, but these articles indicate that the versioning relates to “low-latency”, and requires “pre-processing” by sending devices.

Hi Urquhart1244, yes I was aware of the XBOX One X having a low latency version so I've no idea if they mean that. I shall relay the info back to them, and see what comes back. I did contact Apple support and 45 mins call couldn't find any related info regarding 'Versions' so im inclined to think LG kinda know but are about to admit lol, overall very frustrating though.
