control one mac from another mac
My elderly mother living in another state has a Mac. I would like to be able to control it from my Mac when there are problems. Both computers use Mojave.

Good Day;
I use screen sharing. It is simple and works very well. I screen share with two people in my city and also my brother in another province with no issues. I send a request via Messages (the received person does not need messages running), the Received person only needs to hit allow and you are in. I also use it for my wife's computer in the kitchen and a mac mini down in my workshop. I like the screen sharing as it is a imac built in app not a 3rd party app
To turn on screen sharing, https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/mac-help/mh11848/10.14/mac/10.14
Hope this helps

With Zoho you send the remote user a software link, they download and install the remote client software and allow for full disk access in the security and privacy pane and it's job done. In some cases you have to allow screen recording too otherwise you can't see the Desktop, but at the end of the day it's a doddle
Had been going to suggest you look at Apple remote Desktop, https://support.apple.com/remote-desktop I'd forgotten all about it because it's an old App that has changed much over the years and other Apps have more functionality
Personally I use Zoho, https://www.zoho.com Possibly overkill for your needs but not that expensive and they provide quick responses to tech support questions which is an important plus in my view.
I'm assuming the mother would have difficulty understanding directions to configure it herself.
If that's the case, have her send you the actual machine, and you configure the remote access directly on her machine so it automatically lets you login. Both Teamviewer and Anydesk offer this capability.
Are they on the Same Network?
In SysPrefs>Sharing, have you setup Screen Sharing or Remote Management?
Even if they're not on the same network, if the OP knows the IP address of the destination Mac, they should be able to just screen share in.
I am practicing trying to control my husband's computer in the next room. I have tried it on the same network and on different networks (we have two at the house). I am thinking I need to check sharing permissions, but not an expert in setting those up either.
I like TeamViewer
How about Port Forwarding then?
I don't use screen sharing but this Apple article fourth bullet says the computers must be on the same network.
I am guessing TeamViewer is a third party app, but can't you just use Remote Management or Screen Sharing? I am not sure which would be easier or how to set them up. I have tried to set them up on my computer and my husband's in the other room without success. I think there are ownership/sharing/Admin settings involved and maybe others which impede setup?
Folks, I have read the Apple instructions and several others online. I have tried all the cryptic things mentioned. Wondering if anyone knows or can refer me to a source which has a complete procedure, including preferences in other system setting panes, as I think there are some settings which have to be in place before the normal remote sharing and/or screen sharing work. Thanks for any help. I have been able with to remotely ACCESS the other computer, but not remotely CONTROL the other computer, which is why i am wondering about Screen Sharing as opposed to Remote Management, however, neither seems to work properly. I do have the correct IP address, correct admin name and password for the remote computer. In your opinions, which should I be using, Remote Access or Screen Sharing?
Well, I have been tinkering with the two computers, and just FYI, I think the sign in name is different than I expected. I used the name I usually use to sing in to my husband's computer (as admin) but Apple has taken and fiddled with it a little, leaving out spaces, also apostrophe, but NOT leaving out period. Also, Some of the letters on my husband's name have been changed a little by Apple, so once I got that all straightened out, things are working fine. Thanks for your ideas!
They would have to know the public IP address.
