I wear 2 watches... That burn above the other bracelet is from my apple watch (series 5).

Apple support also gave me some spiel about it being some contaminant or badly cleaned watch (it was like 2 weeks old at the time so lord knows what they think I'm doing to get it so messy), or nickel allergy..

The other watch (The Omega) I rarely take off and I've never had a problem with it.

So I now suspect Apples' "reasons" are BS because I think they know or at least deeply suspect what causes it.

If I were to hazard a guess.. This is something related to the intense green light on the rear of the watch.. I suspect this because if I turn off the heart monitoring feature (Settings / Privacy / Health) this problem does not occur. I think some people under some specific circumstances are affected - they get what amounts to a burn from this light. Is the light staying on too long? , is it too bright?.. or is it just a sensitivity that some people get? - I don't know. But I think Apple should level with people and say - not tell them it's because it's an allergy / or contaminants. Some prominent warning on the packaging.. Because if people knew this could happen, or had a family history of illnesses caused by exposure to light .. the might think twice about buying this.

I have a burn almost the exact diameter of the battery, I also sleep with my hand under my pillow. I have had my watch since Christmas and just been burnt in the last week. I contacted Apple Support and they basically told me that it is a skin rash from not cleaning the watch re: soap build up 🧐 I am not too happy with the diagnosis knowing now that other people have the same thing happening to them. I think Apple needs to step up to the plate and recall these watches if they are harming us in this manner!

I agree with your comments Christian. It definitely seems related to the heart rate function. I wasn't too concerned about the burn I got at first but a sort of scab keeps coming up in the same spot. That doesn't seem natural. It is 3 1/2 months since my burn first popped up (about Dec 1st) and it is still not back to normal. it seems to heal and I think all is well and then another scab or peeling skin area pops up. I attributed mine to wearing it at night. I switched it from my left to the right hand wanting to let it fully heal and still have it on my right wrist. I have not experienced any problems on my right wrist.

This morning after exercising at a gym, I took the watch off to take a shower. When I got out of the shower the four green lights on the back of the watch were lit. They stayed lit for some several minutes after that. I don't know how long the lights were lit but I am pretty sure it was at least 10 minutes. I believe this is what happened when my wrist was burned several months ago. I suspect that there is some sort of energy released when these lights stay on and that this in some way 'cooked' a spot about the size of a penny on my wrist. This happened about Dec 2nd and there is still a scab on my wrist now March 27th.

The same thing just happened to me and I’ve had my watch for over a year. A burn developed exactly where the green LED lights up to read heart rate. A swollen BURN. I do not have an allergy and keep my watch clean. These are burns. Thanks for the info you guys! I was happy to see I wasn’t the only one and that this is a huge issue.

My burn happened almost 2 months ago. It was more or less Dec 1st. It is still not fully healed. The burn was directly under the magnetic charging part of the watch. I did not take any photos of it the first 10 days or so because I thought it would heal up within a week or so the way most burns or cuts do. I actually thought it was just an irritation at first as there wasn't really much pain associated with it. The skin at this location still feels a bit thickened but that gradually has diminished over time. I was going to show this to my doctor but due to Covid in person restrictions I have not been able to see him. I switched to my right wrist after a couple of days to facilitate healing.

A few weeks after I had my new Apple Watch 5, purchased directly from Apple.com, I felt itching and found a perfect red circle under my watch. Switched to right wrist until my left healed and switched back after it healed. Last night, I took the watch off to charge and my wrist was bleeding from a dark burn i've not had until tonight. I've had it several months now and it continues to irritate and burn my skin. These devices cost too much for the technology to not be in place to accommodate this problem. Please, Apple, do what's right and recall these devices and correct this problem. Please, Apple, do what's right and recall these devices and correct this problem.

Sounds exactly like my burn. I agree with you. It is not due to not cleaning the watch. I am convinced that it is related to the magnetic charging mechanism in the watch. I think for some reason mine lit up as it does when you want to see the display and it stayed lit longer than it should have while I was asleep and for some reason that caused the burn.

I have a burn on top of my left wrist directly under the bottom of the watch. There was a red, raw area about the size of a penny. This happened near the beginning of December. I thought it was minor so I just changed the watch to my right wrist planning to change back to the left when it healed. It is over one month now and scabs continue to form. It is still red and scabby although the red area is smallest now. I am concerned that it is still not healed. I am generally a quick healer. I have photos at various stages but not from the original burn as I thought it was minor at the time.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do plan to show this to my doctor. I have a series of photos that I have taken over the last 3 months since the burn first occurred. I plan to show those to my doctor.

I moved the watch from my left to my right wrist right away when the blister first appeared (Dec 1st),. The original spot has continued to flare up on my left wrist periodically despite now wearing the watch there at all since it first formed. That's why I think the damage was not just skin deep. I believe it extended below the skin. If it was just skin, I don't believe it would keep re-forming. I have not any issues with it on my right wrist so far but I am watching carefully.
