JPG versions of HEIC files have suddenly appeared!

Im not sure if this is due to the latest MacOS update - but all of a sudden all my HEIC photos that I've imported into Photos have now got JPG versions of themselves!

Does anybody know why this may be and how I can get rid of the JPG versions and stop this happening in the future? Its VERY annoying as it just clutters up my library unnecessary. Something seems broken :-/

many thanks for any help!

Which system version do you have currently installed, Nick? Are you using Photos on more than one device?

There are three possible reasons for this happening:

  • If Photos repaired your Photos library for some reason, the JPEGs may be previews of your photos that have been recovered from the library. Are the additional JPEGs in a folder or album with "recovered items" in the name?
  • Or, if the photos have been imported from an iPhone and the Settings on the iPhone have been changed in the "Photos > Transfer to Mac Or PC" settings from "Keep Originals" to "Automatic", then your iPhone may now be transferring HEIC images as new "JPEGS".
  • Or did you enable any cloud services? My Photo Stream, Shared Albums, iCloud Photos Library?

Hi, thanks for getting back,

im using Catalina 10.15.6 (just updated latest update today). I imported my photos from my iPhone 8 running the latest software on that too. I do use photo stream so it probably had those in the library before Imported.

Ive always had the 'keep originals' option on my phone and done use the iCloud library (never have).

Strangely - I don't seem to be able to find the files within the Photos package if I search for them - has the 'goto file location' option been removed now?

You could do that in iPhoto, but never in Photos. And it would be of no use. Photos 5 on macOS Catalina is renaming the originals with unique hexadecimal codes. Yo will not be able to recognise the files inside the library package by the filename. How Photos 5.0 on Catalina Manages original Files and Filenames

I would not use My Photo Stream any longer, at least not with a modern iPhone that is using image and video formats not supported by My Photo Stream. It is just an added complication.
