To free up space once you have backed up your photos on your device To IClouddo you then delete them from the device?

Photos in iCloud is a sharing/synchronisation service - that makes you photo content available to other devices, or via a web browser from any computer.


Photos in iCloud does not provide a separate storage archive for you photos; if you delete photos from your iPad or iPhone, the iCloud copy is also deleted.


If you want to archive your photos to a cloud service - therefore releasing both local and iCloud storage - you need to use another Cloud storage provider - such as Google (Google Drive) or Microsoft OneDrive.
