When I selected erase to proceed for backing up my MacBook, does that erase everything that was on my external hard drive including other backups from my PC?

Was everything that was backed up previously on my external hard drive erased when I selected erase to proceed?
when I selected erase to proceed does that erase every other back up from my PC on the external hard drive?
