I find myself in utter disbelief that I can’t stream a movie from Apple TV plus to my Apple TV.

What is your model Apple TV? Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support

If you have an Apple TV (2nd generation or earlier), then that is not supported, and documented as such. Those models are classified as technically obsolete and will not receive new features, including new services. Not even through AirPlay.

If you have an Apple TV (3rd generation or later), then that model is supported, and it can be made to work.
