"This Apple ID is not valid or not supported."

My grandmother recently died and I was given her iPad, which she hadn't used in a couple of years. I'm trying to go through it to make sure we have pictures, texts, etc before resetting.

I keep getting a prompt to enter her Apple ID and password, and it seems that her account was tied to a now-defunct email. I've tried all her usual passwords, but can't even reset it because iforgot.apple.com gives the error message "This Apple ID is not valid or not supported." I get the same error when trying with a more recent email address.

I can't do a factory reset because I can't turn off Find My.

So I'm stuck in a loop: I don't have the password, but can't reset it because Apple doesn't recognize that the account even exists. But the iPad asks me for the password every 15 seconds.

Any suggestions?

Contact Apple. They need to see a copy of the death certificate and a copy of the will or a document that shows you inherited it.

Either take the device, the above paperwork, and a photo ID to the nearest Apple Store (if it has reopened)
