Can't turn off notification sounds.

I have unchecked "play sound for notifications" for every app on my computer and still I get the annoying ding every time I get an email. I have tolerated this for a while with speakers muted, but it is a real problem for virtual meetings. I want them off permanently, so I have not messed around with "do not disturb" as I assume there will be unwanted consequences of that.
