Why doesn't my new iPad appear in iTunes?

I have a new iPad Pro perhaps two months old when I plug it into my iMac which is running Catalina it does not show up in iTunes

An iMac running Catalina does not have iTunes. It was replaced. See: What happened to iTunes? - Apple Support


Your iPad Pro should appear in Finder. See the following from the above link:

Finder is the new place to back up, update, or restore your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Just connect your device to your Mac and it appears in the Finder sidebar. And you can easily drag and drop files to your device.
