Zipped files not showing

So this changed all of a sudden, not sure if it happened when I updated to Catalina or somehow else but I used to be able to expand a zip folder in finder and finder would pull me to the new folder containing the zipped files but after this weekend it's just expands it without selecting the new folder so I have to go find the newly created folder in my downloads folder which is pretty sizable. I've checked the setting in Archive Utility and The Unarchiver and wasn't successful in either of them expanding and showing me the contents.

Has anyone come across this?

Hello nkudlich,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities!

We understand you are seeing an issue with uncompressing a .zip file and the behavior of the windows when it completes. We are happy to help provide some guidance on this.

It sounds like some of the sorting settings might have been changed or modified when you updated. To test to see if this might be the case, try opening Finder and navigate to your Downloads folder. Once there, you should see sections for your files including "Name", "Size", "Kind", "Date Added", near the top of the window just above all of your downloaded files. If you click on the "Date Added" column, this will sort your downloaded files to show either the newest files added, or oldest files added. Once you have it arranged so the newest files added show first, and try unzipping a file, does it now show that folder at the top?

You can find some more information about customizing your preferences in Finder here:

Sort items, group icons, and resize columns in the Finder on Mac

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hey there nkudlich,

Thanks for that information. We'd like to test to see if this is a system wide issue, or something only impacting your user profile on your Mac. To do this, we have a few different steps to take.

The first step would be booting your Mac in to safe mode and testing for that behavior again. Take a look at the steps to boot in Safe Mode here:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Once you are in Safe Mode, please try opening a .zip file and see if the same thing happens. If the same behavior occurs, the next thing would be to create a test user account on your Mac and try testing for the behavior in that user account. Here is how you can create a user account for testing:

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

If the issue still continues, we would advise reaching out to our support team directly for some further in depth troubleshooting: Get Support

Best Regards.

Nope, that's not the issue at all. Even with the different changes the only one that makes the new files pop open at the top is date added but I've been working in date modified for the past two months. The behavior that was happening was pretty much like the snap to function in Windows when a new dialogue box pops open and your cursor automatically moves to the the default option but with zip files so when you'd double click to open the zip file, it would run the unarchiving process and pull the finder view into the newly created folder instead of leaving you on the zip file.
