Reformatting Mac OS operating system

I am in the process of installing a "My Passport SSD Portable Hard drive." It has been recommended that I reformat it, so I m trying to do that. Part of the instructions says, "Verify that the drive appears in your computer's file management utility listing."

Where can I find that? Where is the "computer's file management utility listing"?

Thanks. I started there to delete the existing system, but I didn't realize that the Disc Utility page was also called ""file management utility listing." It looks like my work is done. It seems that when I used the ERASE button and highlighted the system that I thought was appropriate, the computer did the rest. I hope so, because the computer had told me, that the erasure could not be undone.
