13" macbook pro takes 20 to 30 seconds on everything action

It seems like a hardware issue. I have a older 2,3 GHZ MacBook Pro early 2011 A1278, its never had any issues, ran great with no issues until a month ago. Suddenly it developed a SSBOD every time you do anything. Its got an optimal load on the MacBook, each upgrade through the years has worked perfectly after installed. Currently I've got El Capitan installed, I use a external drive to store all my data and backups.

I ungraded the memory years ago to the correct 16gb of memory as recommended by OWC. Literally the machine ran for 9 years w/o issue.

I've looked at the activity monitor logs, the cpu is at about 2% usage, memory (16GB), is about 4 to 6% usage, yet the SSBOD is spinning spinning spinning at every mouse click. And it takes about 20 to 30 seconds for any action to occur. I'm going to put back in 8 gb of the original apple memory I still have to test that its not a failure there. I've thought to test if its primary or secondary channel related by changing the Samsung 1TB SSD to the secondary channel then booting from there.

However troubleshooting takes a long time due to actions taking so long to do, when EVERY action takes 20-30 seconds, its torture trying to trouble shoot.

Any help out there?

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.11

OK figured it out😁, the computer had Sierra installed on it since I owned it, in the course of all that the apple update gave it new SMC files and Boot rom...the SMC file dealt with battery issues. That lead to a search where I looked up the latest boot rom and SMC for Sierra and High Sierra .

. The SSD is an Samsung that was a cheap replacement for my older SSD, OWC said its going to fail, replace. Thus I loaded a small ssd with the install disk for High Sierra , and loaded it onto the 750 HDD data drive, and it installed like it should, AND matched the boot rom and SMC on the computer. The battery issue stopped, and the SSBO is completely gone..hooray

Thanks Leroy and CT!! you guys were very helpful.

Of course, it could be the disk anyway, or some other hardware problem. Have you tried Apple Hardware Test?

Standard other things to try:

Does this occur for a different user, e.g., Guest? How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.

Does this occur after starting up in Safe Mode

Consider the possibility of a third party software conflict.  EtreCheck can be used to investigate what is installed.  Give it Full Disk Access. You can post the report here. Someone might spot something.

I'll try the the hardware test, when I hold the D key it goes to internet recovery so I'll start it up and do the AHT. In AHT test extended test..will reply back in 1hour or so after I get results.

  1. yes it happens on a second account setup as admin, it takes a while to set it up at 30 secs per movement or action.
  2. As I said it also occurs in safe mode, SSBOD just like in normal mode. I'll double check after the AHT.

Third party software isn't installed this is happening in a perfectly clean install, zero apps installed except a clean load of El Capitan. Installing EtreCheck will be a pain, after I double check safe mode again, and AHT, I'll take the time it takes to install it and then print to file the results so I can post them

I've done 20 hours of trouble testing, been using Macs for 16 years, linux for 22, so I'm adept at OS X...thanks for the help so much.

there.

What does that mean exactly?

I see now— I have a older 2,3 GHZ MacBook Pro early 2011...

This machine is long in the tooth — all HD will fail in due time you can expect 3-5 yrs replace the drive

It seems like a hardware issue.

not all SSD are compatible / did you also install a new SATA cable(?) Booting externally will bypass the internal SATA and internal drive.

OWC SSD Upgrade Kits For MacBook Pro 2011

Aug 25, 2020 8:17 AM in response to leroydouglas

Leroy,

its a early 2011 MacBook Pro 2.3 GHZ with 16 gb OWC memory, MacBook 8.1, El Capitan installed, Samsung 860 QVO 1TB SSD (MZ-76Q1T0B/AM) V-NAND, SATA 6Gb/s - primary channel, Seagate Momentus® XT 750 GB SSHD in secondary channel (as data drive), with owc data doubler try installed.

Previously it had a 500GB Samsung SSD and a 500 GB Momentus® XT 500 GB SSHD installed as a fusion drive, moved to a 1TB SSD to improve performance. All was running fine, when suddenly all **** broke loose and the computer started running in Granny slow it takes literally 30 secs for any action to get the SSBOD to stop give a mouse curser (sp?) , and then every step after 30 sec each. To Install a second admin account took 10 to 15 min.

So very slow to trouble shoot. However it ran for years as a fusion setup, was running fine with this SSD installed.

I'm calling OWC one the cable will let you know what they say. I had wondered if a cable got squeezed and had an intermittent slight short??. I'm running the AHT, which will take a while.. 1.5 hours so far for the extended test... I'll post those results later.

All I appreciate your help.

Ok both the short and extended AHT test gave the same result:

4XXX/4/40000005 "Battery"

I'm assuming I need another oem battery..I'm thinking the battery was replaced by a friend, as he'd bought it from me, and he used an off brand..non-oem battery. what do you guys think? I'm just surprised I have the SSBOD issues while its plugged into the wall on a power supply
