Just got a new Focusrite Scarlett Solo to use with GarageBand but it won't record

GarageBand 10.3.5. OSX 10.15.5, iMac. This one has got me stumped. The Scarlett is working, the mic and guitar indicators are flickering as expected when I sing and play but when I try to record, nothing - flat line. If I use the internal mic, I can record. All the settings are correct for input and output in GarageBand and in System sounds. Any suggestions?
