Apple Watch Cycling Workout

This morning I road biked for an 1:10 did 16.63 miles my avg heart rate was 133bpm and it said I burned 900 active Calories. This afternoon I Mountain biked for 1:24 did 10.64 miles my avg heart rate was 143bpm and it said I burned 553 calories. How can I maintain a higher heart rate for longer and burn less calories? The mileage should be irrelevant but it seems like it’s based off of mileage rather than effort. Does anyone have any insight?
