Edit Word document from iphone

I have an iphone 7 (iOS 13.6.1) and a Mac (Mozilla). I have Word and Pages installed on both devices. I have Desktop and Documents on iCloud.

I saved a Word document on the Desktop of my Mac. I now want to work on it on my phone. When I start Word on the phone, I can see the document and the cursor blinks, but I cannot type anything. Why is that, and what can I do about it?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Here's how to turn on Handoff on your devices: On your Mac: Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click General. Select "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices." On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff, then turn on Handoff.

Thank you for that suggestion. But Handoff is already allowed on both my devices. Handoff surely only works when a document is open on one device?

I asked about a document saved on my Mac's desktop a day or two ago. I saved it, closed Word down, shut the Mac down. Today I opened my phone, started Word on my phone, located the document in iCloud and opened it on the phone in Word. I hoped that since I was opening a document located in iCloud I would be able to work on it on my phone; as I said in my original post, the document was open in Word and the cursor was blinking, but I could not type anything.
