Backup disk icon on desktop after upgrading to Catalina.

A few months ago I upgraded to Catalina and ever since I have an icon on my desktop labeled Backup.

If I do a "Get Info" check the disk size, etc. seems to be exactly the same as the original Macintosh HD disk. However, if I click on the disk it has no contents.

I'm running out of free disk space and want to make sure that nothing extra is being used by the "Backup" disk. Does anyone know why this icon appeared, what it is for and how I can get rid of it?

hello again,

i understand your concern about wasted space being used by "backup". you say when you open it, it's empty. why it is showing up as a second separate drive, i'm guessing it has something to go with apple's decision to split the drive into two partitions. one is READ ONLY, while "HD Data" is read write. if your internal drive is only 499GB, then "Backup" is not using any space. if you have a 1TB drive then "Backup" IS using 481.41GB and "Macintosh HD" is also using 481.41GB.

if you are unsure of your disk size then AppleMenu>About This Mac then click "System Report"

click on "storage" in the sidebar. if you have 499GB then "Backup" is empty. if you have 1TB then "Backup" is wasting space and you need additional help.

Hello d_devries,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, you are seeing what appear to be a disk drive on your Mac after updating. We can understand why you'd reach out for some clarification.

Try disconnecting any external drives you have connected, and see if that removes it.

Also, when you pull it towards the trash, do you see an eject symbol, or does it simply move to trash?

Cheers!

you had me confused so i took a better look at one of your earlier post. here's what i finally saw:

"Macintosh" has 480.6 GB on it. "Backup" only has 897KB. that's practically nothing. also, in your screen grab of Disk Utility, Backup appears to be its own partition.

i won't pretend to know what it is, but it's less than 1MB of stuff. i would not worry about 1MB out of 500GB. i would just leave well enough alone until you hear from someone more knowledgeable than me.

Hello Sterling,

Thank you for your reply.

I don't have any external drive connected so there is nothing to remove. I tried pulling the icon towards the trash and it simply moved to the trash bin. However, once I reboot the computer it appears again. The same thing happens if I right-click and choose "Eject". It just keeps reappearing.

I will try to attach some screenshots of the icons and the Disk Info for both drive icons.

Hello Karina184,

Thank you for your feedback. I booted in safe mode and the drive icon still appears. I also opened the Time Machine preferences in System Preferences and the Backup disk shown on the desktop does not appear in the list of Time Machine disks. I also tried to unmount the disk named Backup in Disk Utility. The icon on the desktop does go away however it comes back after a restart.

I am aware of this problem as well. Unfortunately it is a casualty of having to work from home. Normally I just use this laptop when I'm traveling for work and have a desktop computer I use when I'm in the office. Before I started working from home I needed to copy a bunch of stuff to the laptop which ate up a ton of free space. That's why I worried about the disk named Backup that showed up after upgrading to Catalina. I want to get rid of it so that I can make sure it isn't using any valuable storage space.
