Mac book storage

My Mac won't let me download or open any documents that I need for school. I think it might have to do with the storage because it is saying it is full, but I barely have anything downloaded on here. For some reason it is saying I only have 5gb, but I'm pretty sure my Mac is supposed to have 256gb.

Click on the Apple icon at the TOP LEFT of the Menu Bar. Then click on About This Mac and then choose the Storage tab on the ensuing window as shown below-



That should show you information about your storage disk. It will show you how much space is available out of the total capacity. If it shows that you only 5GB left on your storage disk then that is dangerously low and nothing will function correctly. Let us know what you see when you perform the above task.
