How can I control how photos are named?

I have a medium number of photos (about 1000) for a small business. When I store these photos, the generally show up in my Apple Photos with a very long name. These names are about 60 characters long, looking something like 97D67AA1-ECED-41B8-A09A-D66BAD890930_1_105_c.jpeg. Is there a way to rename these photos?

Yes. There is a way to re-title them in the Photos library and when you need to use them outside of the library you can export them with the new title as the file name.

The following are two user contributed AppleScripts that can be used to re-title selected photos. The are from this user tip page: Thematic Index to Photos for Mac related User Tips - Apple Community

Batch Change Title to Text w/Padded Sequential Numbers

Script: Batch Change the Titles to a Given String

Script: Batch Change the Titles to a Given String

You can download a compiled versions of the scripts as an applications from this tutorial site:  P01 - Applescripts from Photos User Tips Compiled as Applications

The above is for retitling multiple photos at a time. You can retitle a single photo by clicking in the Title field and entering the new Title. To make the Title field visible below the thumbnails make sure Title is checked in the View ➙ Metadata menu option:

If you select multiple photos, bring up the Info pane and enter a new title in it all of the selected photos will have the same title.

This is one of the biggest changes in Photos 5.0 on Catalina. Photos is no longer storing the imported photos with their original filename, but renames the saved files with unique filenames. How Photos 5.0 on Catalina Manages original filenames… - Apple Community

When we export the image files from Photos with "File > Export", Photos will recreate the original filename, but inside the library packe the original file is not used.

And even previews dragged from the Photos browser may have the new, cryptic filename, or shared files in the media browser. Better use "File > Export" to create files with the original filename.

I am using the Apple Photos app. When I upload the photo from my iPhone and open it, I select the "i" button to see the name of the photo. In most cases it is an IMG_XXXX.HEIC file name. I have been moving the photos into a folder to keep my inventory organized. I then create a link in an Excel spreadsheet to the photo. In many cases, the file name changes when the move is complete from the 7-8 character file name to a new name which is 35+ characters in length. This happens if I move the file into a shared folder in the Apple Photos app, Google Pic and Amazon pictures apps.
