MacBook Air 2020 VS MacBook Pro

Hi.

I am going to start a PhD and I need to get a new Mac.

I will use it for mails, browsing on the net, but also writing and conducting analysis. I will use programs such as Stata, R, Latex.

I would like to go for 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

I am undecided between:

-MacBook Air with 1.2GHz i7 processor

-MacBook Pro with 2.0GHz i5 processor

Some says that i7 on an Air doesn't make sense.

Which one shuld I get?

Thank you a lot for any advice.

It really does depend on how complicated these types of analysis take to run. If it's the difference between 1 minute let's say, and 2 minutes on a lower-end vs higher end Mac, and you are not doing that very often then it's no big deal. Or even if it's 10 minutes vs 20 minutes once or twice a day.

But if you're doing this 10 times a day then getting a MacBook Pro would be better if longer processing times for these calculations is going to cramp your workflow.
