I dropped my phone on my Mac keyboard today and now the screen looks like this:
thing is the screen itself is not cracked...so it looks like I may have broke some part of the display circuit
is it possible to tell what is broken here?

Whether it's worth the price is something only you can decide. You shouldn't have to reset the whole thing to fix it.
It's the display panel itself that's damaged.
Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store. They won't charge anything to look at it and give you a price quote for the repair.
The LCD is broken.
Thanks, the thing that makes me most nervous is resetting the laptop since I keep a lot of important items on there. If I don’t have to reset it then that would be the biggest comfort at the moment. Anyway I will see if I can check it to be fixed...thanks!
Yep. Best practice is to do it since day one so it'll get a copy of your entire system and it will keep backing it up on a certain cycle (whatever you choose).
the other method (if you're comfortable doing it) is to just swap your old HD into the new Mac. Either way there's multiple ways of not losing your data!
If I go to an Apple store to replace it, will it be worth the price over replacing a new laptop? And will I have to reset the whole thing to fix it?
Do you have a time machine setup? If not, I would try to set one up (assuming you can still see a bit of the screen) or better yet see if you can connect to an external monitor and do it that way.
Yep I believe I have Time Machine, though I’ve never used it...do you need an external disk in order to use it?
