update 2007 iMac - from OS X 10.8.5

hello!! I've not touched my 2007 iMac in years so have not been keeping up with updates. now truly need it since we're at home more now.

specs:

24" iMac - mid 2007

memory: 4GB RAM

current OS: OS X 10.8.5

plenty of free hard drive space.

I hear it's possible to update to El Capitan, BUT, do i need to update to something else first, before i jump straight to El Capitan? I don't want to jump the gun and mess up. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

iMac 27″, OS X 10.11
