iMovie cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID

I'm new to Mac OS - and indeed Macs. This has happened a couple of times (e.g. with Pages, rebooted, it worked).

It seems like a typically obscure Apple message that tells me nothing. It's a new Mac - setup by me with my one and only Apple ID. I have not "refunded" this and it was "purchased" with said ID.

I'm a fan of iPhones and iPads - and there's loads to like about the Mac - but it's way more irritating than Windows when it comes to stuff like this.

Help...!

Hello halian_uk,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're trying to update iMovie on your Mac but are running into an issue. There are a couple suggestions that might help.

Do you recall accepting the app when you initially set up your Mac? If not, checkout out the following article to complete this process:

Get updates for preinstalled apps on Mac

If you continue to run into an issue with the update, you should try deleting the app from your Mac. You can then visit the App Store and download a completely fresh version of it to your Mac.

Best wishes.
