Finder Preferences "Recents" in Sidebar issue

I recently went to Finder>Preferences>Sidebar and uncheck the "Recents" box to make the list disappear when I open a Finder window. However, even though the category "Recents" no longer shows in the sidebar, the list still shows up when I open a Finder window. I know this is just a list from some sort of search and I don't want to delete these files, I just don't want to see the list when I open a Finder window. What's weird is they show up for no apparent reason. I've left the checkbox unchecked and restarted my MacBook Pro but the list continues to show up. Any ideas?

Reboot the machine.

if no resolve Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login and test. Reboot and test as caches get rebuilt.
