How to erase a disk for Mac - Apple Support

  1. Choose View > Show All Devices from the menu bar in Disk Utility. The sidebar now shows your disks (devices) and any containers and volumes within them. The disk your Mac started up from is at the top of the list. In this example, Apple SSD is the startup disk:

  1. Select the disk that you want to erase. Don't see your disk?
  2. Click Erase, then complete these items:
    • Name: Type the name that you want the disk to have after you erase it.
    • Format: Choose APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Disk Utility shows a compatible format by default.
    • Scheme: Choose GUID Partition Map.

3. Click Erase to begin erasing your disk and every container and volume within it. You might be asked to enter your Apple ID. Forgot your Apple ID?

4. When done, quit Disk Utility.

The mac is trying to instal macOS Sierra, Sierra cannot be installed on a mac that is running g APFS.

you need to go back to Disk Utility.

Highlight the Apple SSD SM01 disk and format it for HFS+ file system.

Click Erase

Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

Scheme: GUID Partition Map.

Click Erase.

See if that works.

What mac have you got and what OS did it first come installed with when new.

I can offer a different suggestion. Did you use Wi Fi for the download? I have found that doing so often results in corruption of the file to be downloaded and then it won't install. If this is the case, then put the old file in the trash and empty it. Then try a clean download using a wired ethernet connection. Do not use the internet during the download process. If you have to temporarily move the computer to do a wired connection, do so. If that is not possible, then you may have to do several downloads to get a clean one that works. I hope this helps you.
