Does Apple Pencil 1st gen work with iPad mini 2?

Or does ANY Apple Pencil work for the mini 2? I bought a pencil and it doesn’t even show up at all under the Bluetooth. I also have a iPad 10.2 coming for my daughter, but I was hoping we could share one pencil since they’re so darn expensive.
