Please help me open old files without extensions!

I need help opening image files that no longer have extensions. I have tried on-line conversion software, but it says it's unable to find the file source. I tried adding extensions like .PCT and then putting them through the conversion software, but the file I got back was just a black square. When I click on "get info," most of them are listed as Kind: "QuickDraw picture." By the names of the files in the folder there is a tiny image of what the picture should be, but the preview image is a blank white page. I also have one file that says Kind: "Photos Document" and Version: America Online v5.0, so I am not sure how it originated but I know they are all old photos and I would love a way to open them if possible!

Which system version is installed on your Mac? Is the version given below your question still the current version "OS X 10.11"? As your question is in the iPhoto forum, are your image files in iPhoto or Photos for Mac, or are the image files in folders in the Finder?

Have you changed the Finder preferences to show all filename extensions? With a Finder window open go to the main men bar and click "Finder > Preferences". In the Preferences panel click the "Advanced" tab and enable "Show all filename extensions".

For each file without an extension open the Info with ⌘i and disable "Hide extension", if this checkmark should be enabled.
