USB doesn't show up in Disk Utility or Terminal, Does show in System Report and Activity Monitor

My DataTraveler USB doesn't show up on the desktop, in Disk Utility or Terminal. It does show in System Report and Activity Monitor (as fsck_msdos). How can I repair it and use it? I have no problem losing all of the data.

Please help.

Thanks.

The problem is that I cannot format it as it does not appear in Disk Utility. Can I force format it?

Perform this in Recovery Mode:

  1. Boot: into Recovery Mode
  2. Use: Disk Utilities in there
  3. Mount: the USB device (Press Mount button)
  4. Proceed from there as Necessary.

To get into Recovery Mode:

Hold Down: Command+R upon boot

Incompatibility is the Culprit:

Your USB Drive is incompatible. It is MS-DOS format. So, you'd have to format it to APFS. Having no problem with losing all of the data - format it in Disk Utility. Or, remove the data to a PC, and then format it on the Mac.

Reinstall the macOS:

If nothing above works, then I recommend you backup your Mac, and then reinstall the macOS.

1. First, Back up your Mac:

Create a Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall.

2. Then, Reinstall the macOS:

Nothing would be deleted. It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be. Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Suppo

Security Software Gets in the Way:

Security Software may be not letting this device be recognized nor accessible due to its Firewall settings.

On a Mac:

Uninstall Security Software from your Mac, as it is unneeded on a Mac. Get the Uninstaller from the developer’s site and not where else. Elsewise, you may end up installing spyware on your Mac.

On a PC:

Leaving Security Software installed on your PC would be fine, in my opinion. So, check the Firewall settings and see if this device is being blacked out as a plugged in item.

If Not Mounting - It may be an Issue with the Port:

Reset your SMC and your NVRAM:

Sometimes changes (i.e. Installations) are made to the system and then settings (i.e. for Ports) become corrupted, technically. So, reset both on your Mac. It might take three tries. to fix this. So, be certain you have the time to do so.
