Devices not working

Our iPhones and iPads have essentially been useless for two days. Emails not coming in, can't load any internet content, Twitter won't update, etc. I got a message to sign into "Update Apple ID Settings" but when I try to do that, I get the dreaded swirling circle and eventually "There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server". Our WiFi is working on our Windows devices and Kindle.
