iTunes crashes when paused but only whilst playing through Airplay

Hi all.

This is something I have been experiencing for a long while now but am now determined to get to the bottom of because it is VERY frustrating!!

Hopefully somebody out there can help me solve it?!

I have done extensive 'testing' and can confirm the following happens every time:

Simply put, iTunes crashes / freezes when it is paused for more than 10 seconds (using either the Remote App or via iTunes itself) if it is connected to one (or more) airplay speakers.

If iTunes is not connected to any Airplay speakers, then the Remote App or iTunes itself can be used to pause, play, select Airplay speakers, etc as it should.

If iTunes is connected to an Airplay speaker (I use Airport Expresses rather than a device with in-built Airplay) then you can use the either the Remote App or iTunes to play/pause, provided it is not paused for more than 10 seconds. If it is, then iTunes freezes and it is necessary to force close iTunes and restart it.

Furthermore, once music has been streamed to an Airplay device (Airport express or Apple TV) then it is not possible to disconnect that Airplay Device (using either iTunes or the Remote App and regardless of whether the music is playing or paused) without causing iTunes to freeze/crash. In this instance iTunes brings up a dialogue box with a progress bar saying "Waiting for Airplay Devices....." that permanently scrolls. Again, iTunes needs to be force closed and restarted.

Provided you have not yet streamed anything to an Airplay device, you can connect and disconnect the device at will without crashing iTunes.

Can anybody help fix this or at least provide some kind of workaround? I have tried everything I can think of but am coming up with zip....

I am using the latest version of iTunes, my Airport Expresses and Apple TVs are running the most up to date firmware and I am using the latest version of Windows 10. Again, this is not a recently started problem, it has been going on for years....

Many thanks in anticipation.

I have now contacted Apple Support.

They advised that I completely uninstall and then re-install iTunes.

I have now done this. Several times. Including taking ALL Apple software off my computer and then re-installing iTunes.

No change. Same problem continues.

Any further thoughts anyone? It seems this is not an isolated incident.....

Many thanks.
