Connecting Airpods Pro to Win10 laptop as *headset* rather than *headphones*?

My brand new Airpods Pro have 2 different ways to connect w/ my Win10 laptop, and I don't know (haven't figured out) how to control:

  1. Works perfectly: sometimes, the Airpods Pro connect as a *headset*, Win10 says "connected voice music." Then, the sound and mic are fine, in Zoom calls, Teams calls, whatever...they work as intended, I am very pleased so far.
  2. Doesn't work: other times, the Airpods Pro connect as *headphones*, Win10 says "connected music" (but not "voice"). In this case, no mic, no speaker connection on my Zoom and other video calls.

If I could count on #1, I wouldn't be here -- I'd be singing hallelujah (ok, no one wants to hear that, at least from me, but point being: yay!) And I know it does work...sometimes. Or: if I knew I were stuck with #2, I would return the Airpods Pro - they are great, but I need something that works for my laptop-based calls, esp for this $$. And I know it doesn't work, sometimes.

Suggestions to control so I can make it work at least most of the time? Thanks much.
