They only go back that far because they are not compatible with earlier Mac hardware.
That said, buying now at a good price for a future MBP purchase could be sound plan.
I’ve got twin 5K monitors driven by my 2017 MBP and have never regretted the purchase.

Thanks for these articles, but they only mention units back to 2015. I'm not so concerned with specific resolution. I just want to know whether it will function. I plan to by a new MacBook Pro when the new units are available with the Mac chips, but would like to buy the monitor in advance, but need to know if it is compatible, at any resolution. Mac literature doesn't go back before units made before 2015....
“Superior” is obviously subjective.
Each user’s needs are unique.
For a “fixed-base” single-monitor setup I suspect I’d go w/ the “future” iMac. (but that’s just me)
I’ve never seen a high-end Apple monitor that didn’t ooze qualty.
Plus, keeping a system “All Apple” has distinct advantages from a life-cycle supportability perspective.
Which will be superior, the new iMac (with the Apple chip) 27 inch screen or the LG 5G screen that Apple now sells?
Thanks so much. Makes sense. All things being equal, the simplest answer is usually the best....
