Color Well is gone from Audio Midi Setup device dialog boxes

I don't know what has happened, but my Mac min running High Sierra has developed some kind of an issue with Audio Midi Setup. The problem is that in the MIDI device screen, all of the icons have been changed to random colors with white text for the device names... which is unfortunate since it gave several of the icons white backgrounds. If I double click on an icon to edit it, the color well which used to allow you to change the color of the background is no longer present. Is there any way I can fix the colors of these icons? I tried poking around in the Audio Midi Setup prefs file, but I can't figure out how MIDI device info is stored in it.

Hello there,

We understand that you're no longer seeing the color well to change the color for a device icon. We want to look into this with you.

To help us get a better understanding of the issue, we’d like to ask a few questions.

  1. First, can you let us know if there were any changes made to your Mac or its settings before this occurred?
  2. Is your Mac running the latest available software version? This page explains how to check for available updates: How to update the software on your Mac
  3. Were you using the steps under the "Create a MIDI configuration" part of the following page to try and access the color well, and change the device color? Set up MIDI devices using Audio MIDI Setup on Mac
  4. Does the issue continue to happen after restarting your Mac using these steps? How to turn your Mac on or off

Take care!
