VO2 Max Reading

So I have only gotten one VO2 max reading before and it happened on a 1 hour hike. I don’t understand since it’s supposed to be only an outdoor walk or outdoor running parameter. I have logged numerous outdoor walks that have lasted well over 20 minutes and a few jogs that were above 20 minutes and yet I get no VO2 reading from that. Does anyone know how to get this reading regularly because it seems to be very fickle and mine seems to take hiking workouts when it shouldn’t?

Apple Watch may log your VO2 max, but you can’t currently check it on the watch itself. To see your stats, you must use the Health app on your iPhone. Go to Health Data > Activity and scroll down to find it. If you have readings for the current month, they will be highlighted in a big orange box. If you have no VO2 max data, it will be languishing at the bottom of the list, under No Recorded Data.


If you can’t find any VO2 max readings in the Health app, that is probably because you have not yet logged the right kind of workouts with your watch. Only two workout types can produce an estimated VO2 max on Apple Watch: Outdoor Walk and Outdoor Run.

VO2 max relates to maximal exertion. So you’ll need to log a pretty intensive workout to generate a reading. And you’ll need to sustain it for at least 20 minutes.

I’ve done several walks since upgrading my Watch 2 to the Watch 6, and I too have issues with the VO2 readings.


  1. My W2 has regular VO2 in the Health App, right up until I activated the W6 on the 13th. Despite taking several walks since that day, the only reading that appears is the last one on the 13th.
  2. The Activity App, however, shows readings. But that data apparently isn’t being synced to the Health App.
  3. I’ve paired and repaired the W6 to the iPhone (X... v14.1) and even did a complete phone reset. At this point I’m stumped and completely frustrated.

Mine stopped recording with iOS 14 and watchOS 7, and I was also hit by the infamous GPS issue. After restoring BOTH the phone and the watch everything *except* VO2 Max works. I even reset the fitness data twice to recalibrate it, but nothing seems to help. I'm not an avid fitness user so I don't care that much about the data in itself, but it irks me that it's broken, especially as Apple showcases it as a metric in the Fitness app!
