Is there a way to connect a second monitor via HDMI cable to my Early 2008 iMac?

I have an iMac 24" Early 2008 Model that I use everyday for work from home....Is there any way to connect a 2nd monitor to my iMac via HDMI and a mini display port? I bought one recently and believe I got the one made for Thunderbolt which obviously does not work with Early 2008 iMac....so is it possible and if so what do I need?

Thank you in advance

Your iMac has a mini-DVI output port.

Look for a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter, such as:
