Safari stops responding on Fox News website?

In using Safari on the Fox News website, the website loads and is initially responsive to my trackpad on a MacBook Pro 2017 running Safari 13.1.2 & MacOS 20.15.6.  After only 10-15 seconds the trackpad is unable to navigate on the site - totally unresponsive, except that it will close the tab or reload the site (only to have the same thing occur 10-15 seconds after loading).  This is not happening with any of my other websites.  Anyone having this issue?  Is there a fix?  I've dumped my history and restarted Safari and done a hard reboot of my MacBook but the problem persists.

I may have found a solution:

Click on the following:

Safari->Preferences->Websites

If you have an entry for Foxnews set it to "Allow All Auto Play"

That resolved it for me.

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Also try the Safe Mode.

Safe Mode - About.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply.        Pastebin.

I am using Safari 13.1.2 on macOS Catalina 10.15.6 (19G2021), and the only issue that I have with the Fox News site is their detection of my ad blocker, which imposes a dialog requesting that I white-list their site. Until I dismiss that dialog, nothing happens, and eventually, with the slight change in browsing progress, that dialog will reappear. Otherwise, the Fox site works fine for me.

There is, of course, a negative "side effect" to always enabling auto-play: namely, I now have to put up with those annoying "commercials" that auto-play on web pages. I'm sure that's why I disabled that in the first place...

However, I would've done that a long time ago, and this problem (the Fox News site becoming unresponsive) only showed up in the last two weeks. So.... I'm left to conclude that either 1) Apple changed something in Safari (or possibly MacOS), or 2) Fox News changed something in their site.

In any event, it appears to have resulted in an adverse interaction between Catalina/Safari and the Fox News site.

It's always somethin'; if it's not one thing, it's another! 🙂

So true on all counts. Very irritating to have to put up with the unwanted auto-play. I put a request into Fox the other day for assistance but even the auto-reply warned that they don't reply to all messages so I'm not holding my breath. I'm guessing that Fox changed something in their coding for the site and Safari (this version anyway) does not like it. Just have to periodically change that setting to see if either side gets it fixed with future updates (intended or otherwise).
