I have a Airport Extreme bought in 2010, I'm trying to reset it completely to use a different username and password, but before i can do a HARD RESET, on the apple support its telling me to update the firmware first, but none of what it suggests is even seen on my Airport Extreme utility. Please advise to check if I need to update my firmware and how?

Perform, the Hard Reset first, and set up the AirPort Extreme again.
Then.....you can "update" the firmware if anything new is available. The last update was well over a year ago.

Firmware updates and resets are not really related at all.
Since the Airport is not even showing up in your airport utility just do hard reset.
