Can I safely upgrade from High Sierra to Mojave?

I have a MacBook Pro (mid 2012) and am running High Sierra 10.13.6 operating system.

My computer tells me its up to date.

But there is a Mojave and a Catalina system out ... can I update to that, even though my laptop says it's up to date? And is there a downside to my updating, such as crashing my computer or havong some of my apps not work properly?

Thanks for reading.

If you're on High Sierra, and when you check in the App Store, there is no notification to upgrade to Mojave or Catalina, then you probably shouldn't.

Yes, those downsides you mention might occur!
