I used to insert special characters in Pages and Notes for my Portuguese language usage by holding down a letter and getting options to insert, and now since I updated to High Sierra 10.13.6 it no longer works and my letters just repeat and I have to do an "insert character" every time.
How can I get my computer back to the way it was inserting through the keyboard, press & hold method?

Try opening Terminal app and typing
defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true
There is also always an alternative easy way to make such characters via standard option key shortcuts. A list is at
