Mail doesn't Erase Deleted Items and other problems

The first issue was Mail.app crashing every time I would Erase Deleted Items. Now, after applying some troubleshooting, I can't Erase Deleted Items. The new problem is that a "ghost" message with no From and no Subject showing is somehow showing up below another message. When I click on the ghost message, it shows the body of some other email.

Steps taken:

  1. Removed the relevant folders in Library, Trashed them
  2. Reset the NVRAM
  3. Reinstalled High Sierra
  4. Removed all of the emails in all of the folders
  5. Changed Preferences to Accounts, Mailbox Behaviors, Drafts Mailbox to Drafts on iCloud, Sent Mailbox to Sent Messages on iCloud, Junk Mailbox to Junk on iCloud, Erase junk message to Never, Trash Mailbox to Trash on On My Mac (don't see a choice for Trash on iCloud), Erase deleted message to Never, Archive Mailbox to Archive on iCloud.

Problem 1: Delete Erased messages has inconsistent behavior, alternately not deleting messages, deleting some messages, and more rarely now crashes Mail.app

Problem 2: "Ghost" email somehow linked to a separate email with no From and no Subject, but clicking on the email shows the body of an email.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You must set Trash ti Trash on iCloud.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

If still no good Disconnect from the Internet, then start Mail, look for the last rec'd eMail.

Does Mail crash if no internet?

Quit Mail & login to your WebMail in a Browser, if possible delete any later eMails there after the last rec'd one on the Mac. Is there a Trash folder in WebMail at icloud.com?

If you have no POP accounts & they’re all IMAP accounts then in Mail’s Mailbox menu choose Rebuild.

#2, double click on that, is the message there? I think it's malformed but when open in Mail's View menu>Message show All headers... is there from there?

Here's what I tried in the meanwhile...

  1. Preferences, iCloud, unchecked Mail
  2. Closed Mail.app
  3. Finder, Library, Mail, trashed V5 folder
  4. Opened Mail.app
  5. Result: Only Inbox and Sent mailboxes show in left panel
  6. Preferences, iCloud, checked Mail
  7. Status bar said it was downloading messages, Drafts mailbox showed up in left panel, no other folders
  8. Closed Mail.app and opened it again
  9. Result: Same problem, no Trash mailbox and I can't delete trashed messages

I think this requires a reinstall...

I followed your instructions:

  1. Set Trash mailbox to iCloud, there is no Trash folder that shows up, but a Deleted Messages folder showed up in the left panel under iCloud. I had one deleted message in there; shows up in Trash on iCloud Mail.
  2. Safe Booted, had a different problem: I could not delete the message in the Trash mailbox, but the "ghost" mail was gone.
  3. Rebooted normally: same problem, could not delete the message in the Trash mailbox, no "ghost" mail.
  4. Disconnected from the internet, Mail.app did not crash when I clicked Erase Deleted Messages, but it still has the problem that the message in the Deleted Messages folder does not erase; no "ghost" mail.
  5. Quit Mail.app and logged in to iCloud, Mail, there were no later emails than the one's I've been working with. But there are just four emails total, if that helps. No "ghost" mail.
  6. I have just one IMAP account, Rebuilt the mailbox.

Okay, just got a new email, deleted it, but it never arrived in the Deleted Messages folder under iCloud folder in the left pane of Mail.app and it is not in the Trash folder on iCloud Mail.

Summary: Mail.app does not crash when I click Erase Deleted Messages, but the deleted messages don't erase. And the "ghost" message is gone; I think the Safe Boot solved that.

Any more ideas?

Thanks.

Yes, WebMail at iCloud.com has a Trash icon as in your screenshot.

I reinstalled, but there's no Trash on the side panel in Mail.app. I changed the Preferences, Mailbox Behaviors, Trash to iCloud. But when I close Preferences, and reopen it to check, Trash mailbox is set to None.

I checked WebMail on iCloud and there are the same emails in the Trash folder. And I can delete them; empty the trash. They go away in WebMail and...checking Mail.app, they are gone there too.

I sent a test email to myself. I can delete it, right-click delete, but there is no option to move it to Trash, just delete.
