best mouse for imac for arthritic hand

Can anyone recommend a mouse for an iMac that sits higher than the Magic Mouse and would be more comfortable for an arthritic hand? I also want a mouse that has a dividing line (between right-click and left-click) like a Microsoft mouse. Thank you.

Welcome Bobbie.

I like a generous mouse as well and we've enjoyed superb service from Logitech mice. Their web site has the search option for "Large/Full Support" and retuned a number of products:

https://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice?filters=3873,3876

However, the best advice I can give is totally unrelated to mouse make or design. That advice is to reverse left- and right-click functions.

Assuming you are right-handed, look at how unnaturally we have to hold the mouse to stretch for the left button we use so much:

My hand hurts when I have to use the left button for everything. When you make the RIGHT button the primary, your hand position is more natural and relaxed:

Give it a try. Even non-ergonomic mice feel better this way.

I wouldn’t expect to find all that much variety in any storefront, short of one specifically catering to older folks using computers.

As an alternative, have a look at some of the reviews and discussions posted around the ‘net, and then order online.

Another (free) option that might work is your iPad. iPad can be used for input on recent Macs, using Sidecar:

Thank you so much, Allan! Great advice! Wow, never thought about reversing the sides but that's a great idea. I will definitely try it soon.

I loved my Logitech mouse when I had Windows PCs. I have to say that I am so disappointed in the Magic Mouse 2 that I just don't use the iMac that much. I have an iPad and use that the most - with no keyboard or mouse. I even bought the latest Apple touchpad but it's still not comfortable.

I may venture into a Best Buy to try out the feel of the Logitech mice they have there, although trying to stay home and away from any chance of getting the virus.

Thank you again.

Hi DB,

That thought passed my mind but I've found few TB mice that seem precise enough in their cursor movement. Have you used one of that model? I'm certainly interested if one has the control I want. When I look at mice in-store, they are never connected to a computer where you can judge tracking.

Have you tried a large trackball, such as:

https://www.kensington.com/p/products/electronic-control-solutions/trackball-products/expert-mouse-wired-trackball/

With this you only need to do one thing at a time. Move the cursor with the ball, then click a button without a concern that the click will cause motion. The is a separate wheel for scrolling.

Lager separate buttons, and a wrist-rest

I found SteerMouse makes the scroll-wheel smoother.

A trackball might be an option as mentioned above, so too might a so-called vertical mouse.

The vertical mouse sits higher, and angles the palm of the user’s hand closer to, well, vertical.

Thanks so much, everyone! I have an appointment to meet with a Best Buy associate at noon. I'll wear a thin plastic glove so I can get a sense of what the mouse will feel like. At least I hope they still have mice on display. I do like the mouse with the trackball that DBAqua mentioned because it appears to sit higher and I don't have to use the trackball but it's there if I want to use it, right? I hope Best Buy has it or something similar.

This is the first time I've used this forum and am so pleased with the great help. After 30+ years with a Windows PC I decided to switch to an iMac because I have an iPhone and iPad that I love. And it just seems that you need to be either all Windows or all Apple. I just wanted to try the Apple computer.

I will let you know what I get and how it is working out. Thanks again to everyone.

Sometimes you have to be "ambi."

I'm retired now but my last job was in development engineering where I was titled, "Manager of Technical Publications." I had to access and interpret Engineering specs and drawings that were Windows-only access, but used two Macs to prepare (or "translate and prune") the data for consumer release, and send the materials ready for our graphics designer, who was 100 percent Mac.

I set the mouse on the Windows computer to see right-click as primary, too. That way I had no trouble gripping a beer bottle after work!

Just an FYI that I just got back from Best Buy where I bought a $25 Logitech, model Control Plus, #510. It's not rechargeable. Takes 2 AA batteries but that's what I had with my last Microsoft mouse. Comes with a dongle. I set it up and wow, what a difference/improvement. Night and day. Much more comfortable and controllable. I will now use my iMac a lot more.

Success! Yeay! Thanks again for everyone's input.
