iMac 27 2020 Flickering webcam

Hi there

I have a new 27inch 2020 iMac. Im trying to use the webcam but its flickering, most noticeable on the background, but over the whole screen really as I noticed it over my face and elsewhere also. I have a white wall behind me with no other objects viewable.

I briefly had a 2019 21.5inch iMac, and it didn't have this issue.

I was expecting the 2020 iMac to have an upgraded webcam - as it is supposed to be 1080p as opposed to 720p, but its not really very useable.

Some previous threads comment on memory usage. I have 8Gb of RAM and it is the mid range 3.3Ghz processor with 512 Gb SSD. My memory pressure is green at all times. MacOs 10.15.6 Catalina. No weird apps installed.

There flickering happens in Zoom and FaceTime. I haven't used any other apps yet.

Any suggestions as I have a week of zoom teleconferences coming up, of 8 hrs per day...?

Many thanks

Shah

Some Other Thoughts:

  • Unplug USB Devices:

If you have any USB devices plugged into your Mac, then unplug them. They would most certainly get getting in the way here.

  • Disable Bluetooth:

Go Here: Turn Bluetooth On or Off on Mac - Apple Support

  • Restart the Mac:

Perhaps you've unknowingly installed an update, and all needs to reset. For, restart the Mac. See if it then works.

Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. updates), system configurations (i.e. for iSight Camera) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM.

  • Boot into Safe Mode:

When you boot into Safe Mode, items load by default, with all settings and caches set aside. So, hold down the shift key upon boot. See what happens then.

  • Create a New Administrator:

See if creating and logging in as a new administrator does the trick. There may be something misconfigured in your current user - something that is getting in the way. Go to: System Preferences > Users & Groups > Unlock > Click: "+" > Create the new administrator

  • Check Force Quit:

See if something is listed as "(Not Responding)". Go to: Apple Menu > Force Quit...> Select anything ending with "(Not Responding)". Also, while in Force Quit... be sure to select Finder, and Click "Relaunch"

As a last resort - Reinstall the macOs:

1. Backup the Mac:

If not, then is probably the macOS itself. If that is the case, then you would backup your macOS with Time Machine Backup. Be sure to use an external Hard Drive that is 1.5 times the Storage Capacity of your entire internal hard drive.

2. Next, Reinstall the macOSUse the third option: Hold Down [command + R] upon boot. Nothing would be lost; it's just that moved or corrupt files, will be relocated or replaced, respectively. Such items would be drivers for the iSight Camera.

You are welcome.

But, try the chat - see how it works out. Show them this post it contains all this troubleshooting - Screenshare your Mac with this window open.

Well, we all know of the reporting of hacking going on. Keep that in thought.

Reinstall the macOS:

You could always just backup the Mac, and then reinstall the macOS. See how that works.

1. Create a Time Machine Backup:

I strongly recommend restoring from a Time Machine Backup, for securing your device, and then restoring it to the backup when you get it back.

2. How to:

You would start by creating a Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with this Mac. Use an External Hard Drive at least 1.5 Times the Hard Drive storage. Go Here: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support.

3. If you don’t Create One:

If you end up not making one, and then the Mac crashes, then you’d have to take this as a learning experience, and know to always create a backup.

Contact Apple Support:

A. Phone Support Info:

B. Chat Session Info:

Being that phone calls are taking a moment, perform a chat session with Apple Support.

Setting Up the Chat Session:

  1. Go to: support.apple.com
  2. Scroll Down to "Tell us how we can help"
  3. Select: Get Support
  4. Proceed from there as Necessary

For Note:

Why Calls and Chat are a Bit of a Wait:

Phone calls are taking a bit to go through at the moment, due do lots of calls. And, that makes sense because with the Coronavirus Pandemic, many are at home at the moment, with much time on their hands to contact Apple Support. So, just stay on the line, and you will get thorough :)

You are welcome.

If it is happening not only with Zoom, then it's the macOS' setting(s) having become manipulated, technically, somehow.

Let us know how it works out.

Hi guys

Many thanks for all your suggestions. I have tried each one but unfortunately it hasn't resolved the issue. As far as I can see it is worse in low light conditions, I wonder if it is a technical fault / design fault with the new 1080p iSight camera in these models?

Im now past my 14 day returns but I might have a chat with technical support and see what their thoughts are - one doesnt use every single feature within 14 days, especially something as obscure as a web cam in the evenings
