How do you convert old "protected" music files in .m4p format to a usable format like .m4a or .mp3? Itunes links to a page that supposedly informs how to upgrade the files first and make this possible, but there is nothing about this on the page.

Pre-2010 128k DRM protected AAC purchases can be burned to audio CD, then ripped back in a DRM-free format of your choice, for a small loss of fidelity. Alternatively if you have an iTunes Match subscription it is possible to match the older purchases, remove your local downloads, and redownload in 256k DRM-free AAC. These replacement files can be kept when you terminate your subscription to iTunes Match.
