Why is my Iphone XR only getting EDGE service (no 4G or 3G)?

I've had my Iphone XR for just over a year now. Everything has worked perfectly in the past. I travelled recently and kept my device on the entire time, with 4 bars of service, but did not enable data roaming and only used internet for data downloads (for context - not sure it relates to the issue). When I returned, my phone never reverted back to receiving 4G service (or even 3G) and instead has been stuck on EDGE, so I can't even load an app or website. I've spent many hours speaking to Vodafone, and even ordered a new SIM card, but I know it's a problem with the IPhone because I've checked the SIM on another device and it gets 4G.

I've tried everything I can find:

  • Simple restart and toggling airplane mode on and off
  • Forced restart
  • APN Settings
  • Ensuring that 4G is toggled on, Mobile data is on, etc
  • I have the most up to date software (iOS 13.7)
  • Finally, I've done a factory reset - both 'Erase All Content and Settings' and 'Reset Network Settings'

Does anyone know what I am missing and how I can fix this very annoying issue?

Thanks!

Hello WatLeuk,

If restoring to factory settings didn't resolve it and the SIM works in other iPhones, we'd recommend bringing it in for an inspection. Hard to know what caused this, but a certified technician would be able to provide more insight.

This should help you out:

Get your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch ready for service

Find Location - Will help to locate a service center near you.

Keep in mind, due to the current conditions you'll want to call ahead or schedule an appointment.

Wishing you safe travels to the store, take care!

Hi WatLeuk,

Thanks for your post. It sounds like you've been struggling with edge service after your most recent travels. We've got your back!

The steps you've taken so far are perfect, but we'd like to ask a few things based on what's been completed. You mentioned that you 'Erased all Contents and Settings' did you restore a backup or set up as new? We ask because restoring a backup could bring the issue back, if it's software related.

Do you have the correct location in Settings > General > Language & Region? Correct time and date in Settings > General > Time & Date?

You could attempt to restore the iPhone as new using a computer. Here's how to accomplish that: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings This is different than Erasing all Contents and Settings since it does reinstall the iOS software when using a computer.

Note: Restoring to factory settings will remove all data and content. You can test it out and always restore once more to restore a backup, but the issue may return if its software related.

Hope it helps, take care!

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks very much for your reply - I do appreciate it. Unfortunately, I tried restoring the Iphone through Itunes last night and I still am only receiving EDGE service.

The only other thing I've read about (but have not yet attempted) is to put the phone into DFU mode. Will this be the next best step, and is there anything else I can do aside from taking it in to the Apple store for service?

I'm also generally curious why would my phone would suddenly stop picking up 4G (or even 3G) after working so well for so long! Thanks again.
