Whenever I’m in Firefox (or Safari, Chrome, etc.), typing Cmnd+‘D’ to bookmark a page flashes the “Bookmark” in the menubar… but doesn't save the bookmark. I have to type it twice for it to work and I wonder if a key-logger is at work, and how would I find out. Suggestions?

Please download and enable full device access for and then run EtreCheck. Then open a new reply here and then press the button that looks like a printed page to get a text input box big enough to paste the hardware and software configuration report here. That’ll provide an inventory of what’s installed.
If you select a file in Finder, what happens when you press Command-D? That should duplicate the file...

No joy there, and I looked through all the pages and items. Next step is a series of reboots without dropbox, default folder, etc. I'll post back here if anything works. Thanks muchly to you both.
Good suggestion, but it worked as it should (duplicated a file) in the Finder. As far as I can tell, this aberant behavior only occurs in browsers - all browsers. I'm thinking that must be a clue . . .

The select the Add Text button.
If that didn’t work, yes, Pastebin is an option.

I was afraid of something like that, but really appreciate the time you, Eric, and Chattanoogan took to stick with this. Thanks for your generosity and expertise.
This system has all sorts of potentially problematic add-ons, including a Safari Technology Preview, two anti-malware apps, cleaner apps, what looks to be two memory cleaner apps, an add-on firewall, and other bits. Wipe and re-load is likely the best path out of here, ugly,as,that might be.
