SSD on Macbook Air Mid-2012 13” A1466

Hi Everyone,

History:

My Macbook Air 2012 start showing blinking folder with question mark. I was able to use it by using force shutdown and restarting it. This is the scenario for everyday. However, after a week or two, I was no longer able to use my laptop. After my thorough research, I learned that the my concern now is hard drive issue. It was also verified by the technician I went to. This technician said that my SSD is a little wet which might be caused of the melted thermal paste by other technician who cleaned my Macbook. This other technician might have put a little more thermal paste causing the SSD to become unusable.

Would like to consult the following:

1. If I buy a 500 GB of OWC at https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/S3DAP2A6G500/ will this fix my issue?

2.Is macsales.com a legit distributor of OWC?

3.Will 500GB SSD work on my Macbook Mid 2012 A1466? I have read that it can, https://support.apple.com/kb/sp670?locale=en_PH. Can you verify?

4.If I increase the SSD of my Macbook will it also help the overheating problem?

5.Would it be safe if I just buy 250 GB or is it better to buy 500 GB?

Your response is highly appreciated.

  1. Clearly you have worked deliberately to determine the your SSD has failed. A new SSD will obviously solve the issue. Can this be related to some other root cause? Possible but after what you have researched and learned, it appears unlikely.
  2. Yes Macsales.com is a legitimate distributor for OWC.
  3. Yes 500GB will work on your 2012 MacBook Air.
  4. No. Unless your previous drive was full and the system read and wrote constant cache files which caused the overheating. Otherwise there will be no major change as far as the heating of the MacBook Air is concerned.
  5. My opinion - Go 500GB.
